8:30 - 9:25 a.m. From BMP to Legislation. Jason Bowers, CSFM and Patrick Coakley, CSFM (mod. Brian Hinkley, CSFM)

MASFMA leaders Jason Bowers and Patrick Coakley will review the BMP planning process, what it took, who got involved, and publishing the BMP manual.  They will also highlight and discuss MASFMA's recent efforts in finding & selecting a lobbyist and what the lobbyist does for MASFMA members, such as: how the lobbyist flags bills that might interest members.  Jason and Patrick will also discuss how MASFMA is becoming the organization a lot of politicians come too to advise them on different policies pertaining to sports field management practices and environmental concerns.

10:00 - 10:55 a.m. Bermudagrass: A Game Changer for the Commonwealth. Jason Bowers, CSFM, Jesse Pritchard, CSFM, Emerson Pulliam, and Chris Webb, CSFM (mod. Mike Goatley, PhD)

In this panel discussion, four sports field managers will highlight their experience and knowledge in producing and maintaining bermudagrass athletic fields across all corners of the Commonwealth. Dr. Mike Goatley will host this knowledge-packed discussion as Jason Bowers, Jesse Pritchard, Emerson Pulliam, and Chris Webb share their stories and successes, including the solutions they've found for maximizing field playability and athlete safety while overcoming Mid-Atlantic challenges like managing winterkill, Spring Dead Spot and other biotic & abiotic stressors. The panel will also discuss how recent turfgrass breeding efforts and genetic improvements have allowed bermudagrass to serve as a game-changing, and sustainable, alternative to cool-season turf fields and artificial turf fields.

11:10 - 12:05 p.m. The Wide World of Weed Control: What’s Working & What’s Not, and What’s Going & What’s Next for Virginia’s Sports Field Managers Shawn Askew, PhD

Dr. Askew will also provide an update on herbicide resistance issues, highlight products that may be more restrictive in the near future, and will discuss new chemistries and technologies for weed control.
